Gonçalo Ricarte

Award-Winning Patch Designer

Gonçalo Ricarte, a high-school student at the School of Tomás de Borba (Angra do Heroísmo, Azores), was the winner of the patch design contest—congratulations on an outstanding and creative vision.

He designed a patch that captures the spirit of exploration, linking the symbolism of caves and human health with space exploration. Each element thoughtfully reflects key aspects of the CAMões | Azores mission, its objectives, and its location in Natal Cave. A highly compelling and inspiring design.
It was also on the stage of the GLEX Summit 2024 that the student received his well-deserved award, presented by Richard Garriott (President of The Explorers Club) and Paulo Barcelos (President of ‘Os Montanheiros’).

According to Gonçalo Ricarte, here are some interesting remarks about the design of this patch:

i) I used several logos from other important space missions as inspiration for my design, such as the Apollo 11 mission logo

ii) The colors of the outer circles correspond to the colors of the Azores flag: blue, white, and gold

iii) The blue circle includes the mission name and the first tribute to the Natal Cave, as well as the nine stars of the Azorean flag

iv) Black and white also represent our universe, with white symbolizing the stars and black the infinite void

v) The symbol is clearly divided into two parts: on the left, the Human, and on the right, the Ship

vi) The drawing of the Human on the left was inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man

vii) Between the arm and the leg of the Vitruvian Man is the second tribute of the logo to the Natal Cave

viii) The cave is represented through the inclusion of basaltic stalagmites and stalactites, elements that most readily symbolize a cave to the general public
