CAMões | Azores Patch

Every mission deserves a symbol that captures the essence and purpose of a team at a specific moment in time, as they embark on a unique journey.

The CAMões | Azores first analog mission called for a truly distinctive patch — one that resonates with our host community in the Azores while authentically representing our team at this defining moment. Our talented colleague and artist, Thomas Foltz, captured every element of this endeavor with remarkable precision.

While Thomas Foltz was developing the Crew Zero CAMões | Azores team patch, we were also delighted to announce the launch of the Student Patch Design Competition. Open to high school students from mainland Portugal, the Azores, and Madeira, the competition ran until December 20, 2023.

Discover the CAMões | Azores Analog Space Research Mission Patch
  1. The overall rounded triangular shape, with waves at its base, represents a volcanic island rising from the sea
  2. Within this form, the patch is divided into three sections, reflecting the program’s core research domains: Space at the top, Ocean at the centre, and Earth at the bottom
  3. The moon features a stylized face with its right eye closed, paying tribute to the program’s namesake—the renowned Portuguese poet, Luís Vaz de Camões (ca. 1524-1580)
  4. The ring encircling the moon forms the numeral zero, symbolizing Crew Zero
  5. Surrounding the moon are five stars, representing the members of the CAMões Advisory Team
  6. The six sparkles reflected on the water represent the members of the CAMões Science Committee
  7. The lower section of the patch depicts Terceira Island, illuminated by moonlight. At its dark core lies the outline of the mission site—the Natal Cave
  8. Surrounding the cave are four stars, symbolizing the members of CAMões Mission Control, whose support is essential to the mission
  9. Inside the cave, the darkness is illuminated by the headlamps of the seven Crew Zero members. Positioned throughout the cave, they explore in search of new knowledge and discovery. While their individual paths extend to every corner, their beams converge toward the moon—symbolizing a shared purpose: advancing knowledge on Earth while looking toward a bright future in space
